Bible Reading & Study
Blog posts in the “Bible Reading and Study” category tend to be practical: most concern HOW and WHY to read and study the Bible, but they also offer Bible readings plans and consider things like how to read a particular book or genre of Scripture. (For more specifics, see the Resources tab of this site.) These posts take to heart the words of St. Gregory the Great: “Study [Scripture], I beg you, and meditate daily on the words of your Creator. Learn the heart of God in the words of God.” Take a look through the posts pictured below, or start with one of these:

“Cross” is a short word of only five letters, but break it apart and it contains the whole story of the Bible. C.R.O.S.S.—Creation, Redemption, One nation, Separation, Salvation. The story of the Bible is our story, too, and each of these stages helps us get the “big picture” of our life in Christ. (First in a series) When my Great ...

What are your plans for the summer? My calendar's filling fast with weekend trips and garden strolls and sitting (in the shade!) by the water. But work is lighter, and so are the days—leaving time for walks and books and doing nothing, if I want. Just seeing "Memorial Day" coming up next week makes my pulse slow down. I can't ...

I am over-the-moon excited about this new Bible. RSV-2CE translation. Beautifully bound. Easy-to-read text. And nice wide margins for writing in. Wide margins! [An Advent Bible Reading plan] Toward the end of Luke’s gospel, Jesus drives the merchants out of the temple and then goes there, every day, to teach. And all the while, the Jewish leaders look for a way to kill him — but they never get the chance. Why? “Because all the people were hanging on his words.” “Hanging on ...

The boy pushing the wheelchair stopped at the foot of the steps, unsure of how to navigate them. “There’s only three, I can do it,” said his brother, and carefully stood up from the chair to climb them himself. “It’s a miracle! He can walk!” shouted the first boy. At which announcement, the whole cafeteria broke into cheers and applause—“Praise ...

I grew up in a Bible-believing, Bible-reading, Bible-loving Protestant family. You could say that the Bible was our Sacrament: it was the place where we met God. At least, it was the place where my parents met God, and the place from which they dispensed wisdom and taught us right from wrong. I wasn’t much interested in it myself, beyond ...

All over the world this week, Scripture is being specially celebrated by Catholics in the first-ever “Sunday of the Word of God.” Parishes will mark the day in various ways. Many will enthrone the Bible in their churches. They will honor and pray for people who teach and translate and study and proclaim God’s word. And they will look for ...
