CHOOSE FROM 3 BIBLE READING PLANS FOR LENT

February 12, 2018 By Sarah Christmyer 5 Comments

“The Word of God is alive and powerful, capable of converting hearts and leading them back to God.”  (Pope Francis)

Are you looking for a simple way to add Scripture to your days this Lent? Open your heart to God’s word by setting aside just 10 – 30 minutes a day. Here are three suggestions to get you started:

1. Pray with the Mass Readings

Read along with the Church and meditate on the Ash Wednesday and Sunday readings throughout the following week. Download my free Monday-Friday reading plan and checklist here:

40 Days in the Bible 2018 (Year B)

2. Read a Gospel

Take a slow journey through one of the gospels, journaling as you go. Here is a daily Lenten reading plan that takes you through Jesus’s life and ministry and into his passion, death, and resurrection just as we are celebrating those things as a Church. To keep a journal, record the date and passage read along with your observations, questions, what it means to your life and how you respond to God.

Choose to read the gospel of Mark or John, both of which we will hear from during Lent in 2018. Download the checklists here:

40 Days thru Mark’s Gospel

40 Days thru John’s Gospel

3. Meditate on the Penitential Psalms

Follow the tried-and-true practice of reading the seven Penitential Psalms. Download simple instructions here:

Praying with the Penitential Psalms

or use my Lenten journal, Create in Me a Clean Heart: Ten Minutes a Day in the Penitential Psalms. It will guide you through a daily prayerful meditation on one of these psalms a week from Ash Wednesday to Easter. Available here from Amazon.

Blessings on you as you read his Word!

Sarah Christmyer writes and speaks about Scripture and the Catholic faith with the goal of helping people meet Jesus in his Word. “The Bible isn’t just a book about God or instructions for a good life; it’s a place to meet God and be changed by him,” she says. Her love of Scripture fuels her writing of Bible studies and related books; her teaching of Philadelphia seminarians; her speaking at conferences and retreats; and writing for blogs such as this one. “Come Into the Word” draws people into the Bible and encourages and equips them to explore it on their own.
