WHAT, ME WORRY?

April 18, 2017 By Sarah Christmyer 3 Comments

How quickly Easter joy can sink into worry as we get back into “the old grind” after celebrating! Thank goodness for friends who call me back to my senses.

I’m part of a Catholic Women’s Bloggers Network that is doing a monthly “blog hop” – everyone writes on the same topic and the links are posted together in one place. So if worry is getting you down this week, click here and see what we’ve all written on “How Faith Helps Me Worry Less.”

"Me, worry?" Plaque by A. E. Mitchell

“Me, worry?” Plaque by A. E. Mitchell, 1928

You’ll recognize mine by the smiling face of Alfred E Neumann. This grinning kid, who later became the cover boy of MAD Magazine, is better known in my family as one of my great-grandfather’s plaques. For years, A.E. Mitchell hand-carved beautiful plaques then cast them in metal. Most were of illuminated Scripture verses, but now and then he created inspirational pieces and this was one of them. The happy-go-lucky face and the message, “me worry?” (which were used in ads and postcards as far back as 1895) reflected his firm belief that faith in God banishes worry from our lives.

Here’s a short-cut to my post on the subject of faith easing worry. If you’re interested, you can see a sampling of my great-grandfather’s Scripture plaques on my Pinterest page.

Blessings! And may our Lord free you from worry as you rest in his love.

I love that little plaque! It’s absolutely perfect – between the smile it brings to my face when I see it, and the meaning behind it. Such an awesome little reminder – that we shouldn’t be the ones worrying – we should leave it up to God!

    Happy Easter!

How neat to have those plaques! It’s funny, but I wondered about that kid on the MAD magazine! I never knew anything about him. Any chance he’s related to Saint John Neumann? 🙂

Sarah Christmyer writes and speaks about Scripture and the Catholic faith with the goal of helping people meet Jesus in his Word. “The Bible isn’t just a book about God or instructions for a good life; it’s a place to meet God and be changed by him,” she says. Her love of Scripture fuels her writing of Bible studies and related books; her teaching of Philadelphia seminarians; her speaking at conferences and retreats; and writing for blogs such as this one. “Come Into the Word” draws people into the Bible and encourages and equips them to explore it on their own.
